A. SMALL IDEAS GET BIG RESULTS
• Your future depends on the actions you take from now on.
• Success is available for your - if you know how to achieve it.
• Many gifted people find everything all too easy at first and never learn the important habits of persistence and patience.
• Ignore your background - we all have potential we can put to use.
• Learn what has to be done, and then put it into practice.
Now let's consider the following:
(1) You must clearly define exactly what you want.
The brain cannot act on a vague goal such as “I want to travel” in a sturdy car.
You must have a clear picture in your mind of what the car will look like. This includes make, model, colour, number of doors, features, etc. Find that car’s brochure either from a car dealership of through an internet search, and make sure it has at least one coloured photograph of the car. Then stick it up on your bedroom wall where it will be the first and last thing you see each day. If you are choosing a second-hand car you should be able to print a description and photos from one of the many car websites.
Take a camera along to the local car dealership and have one of the staff take a photo of you sitting in the car of your dreams. Make sure it is the same model and colour as the one your want.
(2) Name the date on which it is to happen.
It is no good saying, “I want to buy a car”. That’s another wish; you must say something like “By 20 January 2013 I will own a white Toyota Model XYZ.”
(3) Draw up a plan to get it.
Suppose the desired date is 24 months away, the cost of the car is $9,000 and you have $4,200 saved up now. The difference is $4,800 and you have 24 months to find it. Therefore you need to save $200 a month. Can you do that? To find out, you’ll have to draw up a budged.
Goal setting works for the following reason ...Setting goals gives your mind a focus.
Think about what happens when your goal is to save for a car, you need $400 a month to do it and the photo of the car is on your wall as well as in your wallet. Sure, you may be tempted to break out and waste some money but you will clearly understand that by having the “ice cream” now you will delay “riding the bicycle”. You will also find the goal of owning the “bicycle” will become so dominant that the wish for the “ice cream” will be far easier to fight.
A variation of starting with small goals is to use the “salami technique” which gets its name because it is like slicing thin strips off a piece of sausage. You simply figure out what your goal is and then break it down into a series of more realistic and achievable goals that, when achieved, equates to the original larger goal.
We use this technique when we’re writing a book because a book, like accumulating a million dollars, is far too big a goal to grasp. It is much easier to first make a list of the chapter headings and then work on the sub goals of writing each chapter.
• The common thread in all success stories is the importance of setting goals.
• Live your goal by putting tangible reminders in the areas where you spend the most time.
• Make your goal as specific as possible.
• By concentrating on the solutions instead of the problems you distance yourself from the herd.
• Start with small goals. Making minor changes now will lead to bigger changes later.
• Use tricks to keep you on track, like exercising with friend.
• Adopt the salami technique - break a big goal down into a series of smaller ones.
Listen to the conversations of those around you and notice that much of it is in the category of “I wish life was easier”. It is full of complaining about problems and wishing that they would go away but, as no time is given to finding solutions, the situation seldom improves.
However, you now know about reframing and once you reframe your attitude from “wishing life was easier” to “wishing I was better” you can start to work on the skills that will make it better. When you do this you move the focus from worrying about problems to trying to find solutions. You can then start to take charge of your life instead of being a helpless victim in the control of others.
The solution to almost every problem is to educate yourself to handle it better. This process is called “self-development” and means that you make the time and effort to learn new skills. This will help you in several ways:
B. A MAJOR ENEMY
Think about this one quickly: “How much does a TV set cost to own?”
You may guess a couple of hundred dollars a year, but we believe the figure is closer to $1,000 a month. This is the money you lose while you are wasting time watching it.
Television is one of your greatest enemies because it provides little by way of self-development for you, yet is a continual temptation because it is easy to turn on and even easier to leave on. The average adult watches over 1,000 hours of television every year - the equivalent of almost thirty 35-hour working weeks. Just imagine where you would be if you spent 1,000 hours a year in self-development?
Television is fine for a little relaxation but the problem is that many programs show an unreal world and serve to reinforce illusions about life. Also, the format of most programs is designed to appeal to the viewers with the lowest intelligence. The result is that your brain receives little or no stimulation.
In contrast, good books require some effort on your part and allow you to stop to think about the subject matter. They also allow yum to re-read a passage if you wish.
• Move the focus from worrying about problems to finding solutions.
• The solution to almost every problem is to educate yourself to handle it better.
• When you feel better abut yourself, you perform better.
• Improving your skills will improve your rewards in life.
• Opportunity favours the prepared.
• Think about the opportunity cost of watching television in contrast to spending the time on self-development.
• Only by working on your skills can you bring out the potential that is bursting inside you.
